When George invited me to come to Vinexpo, which occurred this past June in Bordeaux, France, it seemed like a nice idea. The fact that George and his family owned Chateau Caronne Ste-Gemme, a Cru Bourgeois estate on the border of the St. Julien appellation, made this invitation all the more worthwhile, and likely to be a great time.
I have discovered that having a friend from the region is a critical component to having a successful trip to any wine producing location, and France especially. George spoke of day trips to Spain, visiting the top estates in Bordeaux, and a great party, called the Fete de la Fleur, which coincided with the end of Vinexpo. We accepted the invitation a few months ahead of time, without any real sense of what the trip will really be like.
Our underlying premise was sound: “Visit wine producing areas when people who are from the region invite you”. This concept worked like clockwork, when my friend, Bob Morris, invited
